  • PAINT TECHNIQUES

Hard Edge Painting - Use a flat watercolor brush loaded with paint to create even strokes and to build up an even bead (thick edge) around the color. To keep colors from blending, allow an area to dry before applying wet paint to adjacent areas.

Soft Edge Painting - Create soft-edge effects by lightly stroking a dampened brush across wet paint or paint adjacent colors onto damp paper to blend one color into another. Apply a brush loaded with water to the wet paint surface to blur the edge. Try making a long stroke of one color, then immediately paint a lighter or darker color along the stroke edge to create a softly blended highlight or shadow effect.

Overpainting - Decorate a previously painted area by overpainting the dry surface with fine dots or lines. Try creating dots by dipping the tip of a brush handle into paint and then onto the painted surface. This technique is usually more successful if the overpainting is a deeper color than the underpainting.

Double Colors - Double load a brush by dipping opposite sides of the brush hair in different colors. Use for unusual painting strokes or dab repeatedly for unusual textural effects.

Pressure Variations - Vary the painted line width by pressing down harder during the middle of a brush stroke to create a ""thick and thin"" effect.

Mirror Image Effect - Fold a piece of paper or a paper plate in half, then open and paint on one side of the fold. While the paint is still wet, fold the sides together and rub over the outside of the unpainted side to transfer the paint. Open and observe the mirror-image effect. Add more paint and repeat the process to change the image or add details.

    • Ink: Washable Crayola Paint diluted with water is your go-to solution!
      • Although we do not recommend removing the nozzles from the ink bottles, dilute the paint with water in a washable paint cup or use a plastic squeeze bottle. Mix the water and paint with a disposable spoon. Use the spoon to drop the paint onto a paper disc to create your masterpieces. Discard any unused diluted paint after use.

    For Best Results:

    • Protect your clothing and work surface. Paint play can be messy!
    • Wet canvases will also need a protected, flat surface for drying.
    • Slow and steady when pouring your paint.
    • Let your canvas dry for at least 5 minutes before removing it from the tray.
    • Use the basic pour technique for a unique outcome each time.
    • Use the advanced pour techniques with strainer for amazing patterns.
    • Try it with neon, metallic or glitter paints too!

    Pro Tips:

    • Use the tray handles to tilt and turn the canvas in any direction.
    • When the picture is complete, use the handles & tray to carry wet canvas to your drying area.
    • Use 3 to 4 colors for the most interesting results; colors will mix and blend to create unexpected new shades.
    • Rinse the beaker before adding a new color.

Make sure you have these items before starting your project (not included in your set):

    • Water
    • Paper Cups
    • ½ Tablespoon
    • Paper Towels
    • Painters Tape
    • String

    Refills:

    • Need more canvases to keep the fun going? We recommend purchasing thin, 6x6 canvases (that aren't specifically intended for use with acrylic paint) at your local craft store or online at Amazon.

Cleanup! Always do the following before storing your set:

    • Rinse paint off of the bowl, adapters, tray, strainer, handles, breaker, and pipette.
    • Re-cap the paint bottles securely.
    • Do not pour any used paint back into the original container.

  • Decorating sculptures made with Crayola® Air-Dry Clay is fun and easy!

    • Paint: Thoroughly dry pieces may be painted with tempera, acrylic, or watercolor paint
    • Markers: Non-Permanent & Washable Markers may not provide optimal coverage if you are coloring a large area of clay since the clay tends to clog the marker nib. Permanent pigment-based markers work well for writing words on the clay.
    • Glitter Glue can be used to decorate dry artwork.
Other product suggestions: pigment-based stamping pads and metallic powder pigment embellishments.
