Jobs in Our Classroom

When older students help younger students, everyone benefits. This activity provides a way for students to showcase their skills and creativity.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

  • Colored Pencils
  • Construction Paper
  • Glue Sticks
  • Recycled Cardboard Box
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors

Steps

  • Step 1

Having older students help or tutor younger students is beneficial to both parties. Have students think about a time they may have helped someone younger learn to do something new such as use a tech device or app. Did it boost their own confidence? How about when an older peer rather than a parent or other adult helped them navigate a situation. Could they relate better to the information?

  • Step 2

Ask students to think of ways they could help students in younger grades. Perhaps they could provide help with math or reading or assist them in using a computer. Or maybe they could help the teacher with certain tasks.

  • Step 3

Have them write a "resume" of sorts describing their skills and in which areas they might be of help. Then ask the class to decorate and label a recycled tissue or other box to put their resumes in.

  • Step 4

Distribute the boxes to younger classes that would like to participate.

Standards

SEL: Relationship Skills: Communicate clearly/effectively, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively.

SEL: Relationship Skills: Provide leadership and seek or offer help when needed.

VA: Use visual structures of art to communicate ideas.

Adaptations

If possible, arrange for students to take turns at being "principal for a day." They might shadow the principal for a portion of the day and even be tasked with something like deciding on a lunch treat for the following day or making an announcement over the PA system.

Create a buddy program. Students can partner with a kindergarten student and share activities during recess. Perhaps the older student can teach the younger one games or they could create a "buddy book" featuring activities they enjoy and things they have done together.
