A Busy Week

Children have fun learning the days of the week using poetry and favorite foods.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

  • Hole Punch
  • Index Cards
  • Loose Leaf Rings

Steps

  • Step 1

Students will create customized index cards, food illustrations, and personalized poems to help them remember the days of the week.

  • Step 2

Write each day of the week on a separate index card.

  • Step 3

Write a poem that includes each day of the week and what makes it special. Perhaps “Monday is fun day" and "Tuesday is blues day...” and illustrate each day's poem line.

  • Step 4

To help make the weekday names more memorable, connect them to favorite foods. Help each child think of foods they like to eat that start with the letters M,T,W,F, and S. Then will illustrate an index card for each food and write the name of the food on that card.

  • Step 5

Help students punch a hole in the corner of each card and attach their set of cards to a loose leaf ring or brad.

  • Step 6

After each student's set is complete, they will present their illustrated Busy Week poem and food cards.

Standards

LA: With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.

LA: Describe several ways that text can present information, such as sequentially or comparatively.

Math: Elicit evidence of thinking about time as a measurement.

Adaptations

Discuss the activities in children's lives that are specific to each day of the week and have them create new cards to add to their collection.

Turn a Busy Week into a My Family's Week by asking children what foods and creative moments or family activities they enjoy each day of the week. For example they may include "Taco Tuesday," "Saturday Softball" or "Friday Fun Night."
